Today (14.06.26) marks the ninth (9th) year anniversary, and remains a painful day for the families of the 72 individuals that lost their lives in a completely avoidable fire that occurred in a publicly owned building, that burned for 60 hours. So what have we learnt in the last twelve months (Credit: Ayshea Buksh / @BBC):
(1) the proposed demolition of Grenfell Tower began in September 2025 and is expected to take two years
(2) at the current rate of progress, this is (potentially) the final anniversary, ahead of the full and complete demolition
(3) the Metropolitan Police have said that their investigation into the fire was the force's most complex in its history
(4) there are 57 people and 20 organisations currently under suspicion of criminal offences including corporate manslaughter and misconduct in public office
(5) the latest figures from the London Fire Brigade suggest more than 1,600 #Highrise residential buildings in London, still have fire safety defects
The inquiry’s final report in 2024 found that all those who suffered losses were ‘badly failed’ through incompetence, dishonesty and greed. The mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan said it had been "nine long years in which the pace of change has been all too slow and the road to justice all too long. Those responsible must be held to account for the systematic dishonesty, corporate greed, institutional indifference and neglect."
For me, personally, I’ve spent the last nine years trying to find solutions, to some of the many (well documented) issues and complex scenarios; as disclosed in the final Inquiry (which concluded in September 2024). The most pressing and challenging being the ‘inevitable’ under-insurance of any construction project. We now know (in hindsight) that the insurance premium for the project was ‘actually’ incorrect (for many reasons) and not reflective of the risks that the project ‘actually’ embodied, particularly during the construction phase. That is the principal focus of my evolving effort _ via #ProjectIIRIS - so if you are in the construction and/or insurance sector, please do get involved, we ALL need to collaborate and use today’s technology to ensure that we do not repeat any of the mistakes that were made.

"Just before 01:00 BST on 14 June 2017, fire broke out in the kitchen of a fourth floor flat before spreading through the whole building. The Met Police have said their investigation into the fire was the force's most complex in its history.
There are 57 people and 20 organisations currently under suspicion of criminal offences including corporate manslaughter and misconduct in public office. Decisions will be made on whether any charges will be brought before next year's 10th anniversary, Scotland Yard said.
The latest figures from the London Fire Brigade suggest more than 1,600 residential buildings in London still have fire safety defects. Almost 200 of those are linked to ACM cladding, the dangerous combustible cladding on Grenfell Tower, and found by the public inquiry as a cause of the rapid spread of the fire."

"On 14 June 2017, a high-rise fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington, West London, England, at 00:54 (BST) burned for 60 hours. A total of 70 people died at the scene and two other people died later in hospital, with more than 70 injured and 223 escaping. It was the deadliest structural fire in the United Kingdom since the 1988 Piper Alpha oil-platform disaster. It became the deadliest single residential building fire in modern European history. #Grenfelltower _ post by Wayne Grainger-Lloyd _14.06.26

A montage of those who lost their lives continues to serve as a stark reminder of both the gravity and depth of the individual and collective loss ........

A recent development into the traceability of products, was also established during #DCW2026 - led by Alex Small of Tata Steel

"The Manufacturers’ Information Hub is a not-for-profit organisation set up by manufacturers with the collective goal of making standardised construction product information directly accessible via a single gateway."
