Statement for National Apprenticeship Week 2026

By Dr Abolade ‘Bola’ Abisogun OBE _ Founder, President & Chief Excitement Officer, DTSA

'FRICS' _ Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (since July 2014)

Digital Champion, RICS _ Digital Forum, Construction Industry Council (since Oct 2022)

RICS Tech Partner (since January 2025)

“Our customers (learners) are always keen to know:

  • Who is the DTSA and what do we stand for?

  • And, as far as the DTSA being considered or referred to as a 'training provider' (with charitable values); where on earth do we fit into the UK construction sector?

Well, we are not about (just) delivering micro-credentials, skills bootcamps and/or CPD and apprenticeship courses in digital construction, although we do all of that exceptionally well. In fact, we do it so well we are likely to be if not the, then probably one of the best in the UK ……… but, those that know, also know, that at the core of the DTSA, we are so much more than just an excellent 'training provider' ….

We truly believe that people (both young and the more mature) with passion and purpose, can change the world for the better _ and not only is that what we believe, we’ve gone on to call it the #DTSAWay

At the DTSA, we've had and continue to nurture, a unique opportunity to work with some of the greatest minds in digital construction and many of the biggest names (all industry professionals), in Information Management across the UK, and the rest of the world. Speaking from personal experience, I know that some of these professionals, whilst arazy enough to believe that they can, have like us, gone on to actually do just that and 'change the status-quo'.........!

Established in February 2003, on the back my first-degree thesis in 1993/94, AI-QS Limited, led to the incorporation of the DTSA, following my 32-month sabbatical at the Centre for Digital Built Britain 'CDBB' at the University of Cambridge. It was whilst at CDBB, and in line with the Building Safety Bill, ahead of legislation, that I established my digital twin ‘use-case’ aligned to the Building Safety Act, which received Royal Assent in April 2022. Through that work, the DTSA has progressed and is currently leading on another 'disruptive' industry facing initiative, called #ProjectIIRIS which maintains a focus on 'intelligent' #data driven insurance products and services. As part of the IM initiative, led by nima and supported by the Construction Leadership Council, ProjectIIRIS is particularly relevant and timely, following the tragedy of Grenfell Tower, amidst the evolving legal requirement called the ‘Golden Thread’ (effective since January 2024)

It’s a new year, so what are we going to do ‘differently’ this year(?), as we approach our third year of existence(?); well, in recognition of National #Apprenticeship Week 2026, we are going back to our core value(s); and despite the seismic change / paradigm shift, sweeping across the sector (and the wider global industry), our values and core values have not and will never change. It is the very same thing(s) that the DTSA continue to believe in; at our core #engaging, #educating, #equipping and #empowering the underserved, overlooked, underprivileged and wider NEET communities, of young people - and the more mature - who are drawn from across the UK, (and the rest of the world) . These 'core values', still stand and hold strong, today (15.02.26).

So, how will we find a way to communicate 'our mission' in 2026 (?) …….

For us, it all starts by recognising our core offering and choosing to be different, choosing to raise the bar and choosing to be the ‘early-adopter’. An example and manifestation of this is that we’ve recently committed to a new tri-partite #KnowledgePartnership with Gloucestershire College and Constructing Excellence South West, choosing to support them through an RICS Accredited, (Level 3) Surveying Technician Apprenticeship. Whether you are an Employer, Employee, Career-changer, Graduate, Under-graduate, or college leaver, if you choose to start a 'new' career in ‘digital construction’, (complete with a unique focus on 5D cost management, using digital twins); then do get in touch with our team, here at the DTSA _ sales@digitaltwinskills.academy

Surveying apprenticeships _ an overview

A great way to become qualified in a global profession like surveying, apprenticeships provide the opportunity to earn and learn whilst working in the surveying profession.

Available to anyone over the age of 16, apprenticeships offer valuable paid-work experiences suitable for people of all ages and skill levels. This includes those early in their career, not in full-time education, and those seeking to upskill in their current role or those who want to transition to a new career entirely.

With a variety of apprenticeships available worldwide, it's essential to select one that best suits your skills and can help you with your desired career progression. Depending on the type of apprenticeship you choose, it can take between one and six years to qualify. During this time, you will get paid a salary like any other employee, complete with holiday leave and dedicated study time alongside your role.

“The apprenticeship pathway was a no-brainer for me because it seamlessly blends studies and real-world work. This dual journey not only boosts my learning but also fast-tracks my career progression. By the time I complete my apprenticeship, I'll have not just a degree but also five years of invaluable industry experience, putting me steps ahead on the career ladder.” _ testimony, from an Apprentice completing an RICS Accredited pathway

The power of apprenticeships: building employer value and fostering skill development

31 January 2024 _ source via RICS website

In today's rapidly evolving job market, the importance of apprenticeships cannot be overstated. Apprenticeships serve as a bridge between education and employment, offering a unique pathway for individuals to acquire valuable skills while contributing to the growth and success of businesses. This article explores the significance of apprenticeships, highlighting how employers can build lasting value by implementing apprenticeship programmes that focus on skill development, professional growth, and a clear pathway for advancement.

Closing the skills gap

One of the biggest advantages of apprenticeships is that they bridge the gap between the skills of job seekers and the ones employers require. Apprenticeships provide hands-on training so individuals can develop practical skills that align with industry needs. In addition, they emphasise communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, essential soft skills for any job.

Building employer value

Employers can significantly enhance their value by offering apprenticeship programmes. These initiatives showcase a commitment to investing in the workforce, fostering a positive corporate image. Companies that prioritise apprenticeships are viewed as socially responsible entities that actively contribute to the development of a skilled and capable workforce.

Apprenticeships provide a clear path for career progression, allowing employees to see a long-term future with the company, which in turn improves job satisfaction and employee retention. Companies that invest in employee development through apprenticeships are viewed as socially responsible and can attract top talent.

Skill building for long-term success

Apprenticeships go beyond traditional education by emphasising hands-on learning and practical experience. Apprentices acquire not only technical skills but also soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. These well-rounded individuals are better equipped to adapt to the dynamic demands of the workplace, making them invaluable assets to their employers. Skill-building through apprenticeships fosters a culture of continuous learning, ensuring that employees stay relevant in an ever-changing professional landscape.

Development and progression

Apprenticeship programmes provide a clear pathway for development and progression within an organisation. By offering structured training and mentorship, employers empower apprentices to advance in their careers. This not only enhances job satisfaction but also reduces turnover rates as employees see a tangible and achievable future within the company. Investing in employee development through apprenticeships creates a loyal and skilled workforce, reducing the need for external hiring and associated recruitment costs.

In conclusion, apprenticeships are a powerful tool for building employer value and fostering skill development. They are a win-win for both employers and employees. Employers gain skilled talent, while apprentices receive real-world experience and mentorship. Investing in apprenticeships is not only a sound strategy for reducing skills gaps and recruitment costs, but it also improves the overall sustainability of a business.
