Dame Judith Hackitt DBE FREng - demands 'collaborative' leadership!

"The industry is facing the same 'cultural' challenge that the HASAW Act presented in 1974" _ this was just ome of the great perspective that Dame Judith delivered, to a packed audience, during the early evening [last night, on 28.11.24], which set the scene for a circa 45min lecture that completely and unapologetically left many in the room feeling a little uncomfortable.

The auditorium was set for a memorable and eventful conversation, one that would positvely impact anyone who had reservations about the scale & depth, of the challenge ahead; and its only just begun, effective since 6th April 2024!

Clearly, one of, if not the most powerful voice within and across the UK construction industry; Dame Judith Hackitt DBE FREng

It was an honour to share the 'virtual' stage with Dame Judith at the recent Trowers and Hamlins _ Mini Building Safety Conference, which took place on 10th October 2024

There can be no excuse for 'continued' complacency ........... we must develop a new generation of leaders who will lead from the front [and collaborate too!]

Huge thanks to Will Mann, CM Magazine and Justin Stanton, BIM+Plus for convening a great event, hosted at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London ....

A new way of working to deliver the 'new' three tiered Gateway process will command that new 'business models' commit to delivering a more agile, data-driven workflow, one where 'collaboration, transparency and accountability' sits at the core of all that we do ........

Ironically, the aforementioned change [and challenge] has led to a profound impact on the way that projects are currently being designed and submitted for Building Control approval [Gateway 2 / #GW2]. The importance of a 'fully' designed scheme (aka a 5D Digital Twin) in seeking to achieve a successful (and timely) Gateway 2 approval, could potentially, mean the end of Design & Build [as we knew or know it?] ...... or maybe not?

One application received by BSR simply said:

"I dont know why I have to do this, it complies!"

Oh dear ........

An engaging and thought provoking Q&A session also followed .........

"Professional bodies, need to think aobut what more they can do to hold their members to account and uphold the highest standards!" _ Dame Judith Hackitt

The event proved to be a 'meeting up' for many of the industry's Senior Leaders, including Linda Stevens [CIOB], the past President of CIOB, Paul Nash #PPCIOB and the ongoing Construction Products 'Guru' _ and industry legend, Paul Morrell OBE, himself a 'fellow' Chartered Quantity Surveyor and former Chief Construction Advisor to the UK government.

In summary:

#GW1 leads, seamlessly to #GW2 which 'should & must' ensure that #GW3  as the 'physical' end-product can also be viewed and interrogated by the BSR [Building Safety Regulator] as a 'digital' / 1:1 reflection of what was permitted to be built at #GW1. The new #GoldenThread (contract) deliverable, on completion of the construction phase, MUST be provided to the asset owner (ideally) using an API to ensure 'optimised' asset-in-use, during the entirety of the whole-lifecycle. And, any material change(s) to the built asset, must be captured and recorded at the earliest opportunity, and reflected in the 'digital' / 1:1 reflection, aka the Digital Twin.

However, to ensure that we all remain #competent and capable, #upskilling is required, by EVERYONE, aka #CPD _ see here regarding our effort, supported by CITB

God willing, we'll see you next year, in 2025, when the real work [and evidence of the wider and much-needed, adoption of digital twins] will truly begin to manifest!
